Hauppauge WinTV PVR USB2 Driver Upgrade & Installation

[Attention Windows Vista Users]

Welcome to the hardware driver upgrade/installation walkthrough. This walkthrough is designed to take you through the steps necessary to install/upgrade the drivers for your Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-USB-2 capture card.
  1. Download the drivers for the WinTV PVR-USB2 (Driver CD, version 3.0) here.
  2. Download HCWCLEAR here and save the file to the same location you saved the zip file.
  3. Extract the zip file for the WinTV PVR USB2 drivers you downloaded to a folder you can remember.
  4. Close all open applications.
  5. NOTE: If you are installing this device as part of a multi-tuner configuration, and your other tuner is already installed with up-to-date drivers, skip the hardware clear outlined below, and go on to Hardware Detection and Installation.

Otherwise, double-click on the HCWCLEAR.EXE file and you'll see:

  6. Choose "Remove All WinTV Drivers and Applications" and click OK. This will remove ALL Hauppauge software and drivers from your computer. Click Yes on the next screen that appears.

*NOTE - This will remove the IR remote and OEM TV viewing software for this device, which will need to be reinstalled after this procedure if you wish to use them. This step may also remove drivers for any other Hauppauge products, which will also have to be reinstalled.

  7. After hcwclear.exe finishes removing all the old driver files, you will be asked to restart.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Windows XP SP1 and Windows 2000 users, please skip (Figure 1), and proceed to (Figure 2).
  • Windows XP SP2 users start with (Figure 1).

Hardware Detection and Installation:

When Windows starts for the first time after you have run HCWCLEAR, wait for your desktop to appear and then plug in your WinTV-PVR-USB-2 to an available USB Port. Windows will then detect the device. Please be patient, the detection sequence may take a few minutes before this window shows up. You will see the following (Figure 1):

(Figure 1)

Click the "Cancel" button (Figure 1). Windows will display the popup seen in (Figure 3).

(Figure 2)

This process may take up to a minute, depending on the speed of your computer. When it completes, the image in (Figure 5) will appear.

(Figure 5)

Click the "click to exit" button.

Verifying Your Installation

To verify that all devices are installed, right click on your My Computer icon, and left-click on "Manage" to bring up the Computer Management window. Left-click on "Device Manager" in the left pane, and you will see a list of device categories on the right side. Scroll down if necessary on the right, and left-click the plus (+) sign next to "Sound, video, and game controllers". You will see something like this (Figure 6):

(Figure 6)

Your list of drivers under here may be different, but there will be a "Hauppauge WinTV PVR USB2 Encoder" entry like the one shown in (Figure 6). If you see "Hauppauge WinTV PVR USB2 Encoder" as it appears above with no (!) exclamation points or red X marks, everything has installed properly, you may close the Computer Management window.

Driver installation and upgrade is complete!
