Beyond TV: PVR software for your PC TV tuner card, Buid your own media center

Clear QAM HDTV Setup Center

With a cable TV connection (no set-top box required!) and an HDHomeRun network tuner, you can record free HDTV in Beyond TV.

The digital signal comes through a standard coax cable feed, originating from your cable company. Most cable providers today will at least push a standard and hi-def version of the major networks (e.g. ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX) as unencrypted QAM channels.

Equipment to get started

Silicon Dust HDHomeRun Clear QAM Tuner Card

The HDHomeRun Clear QAM tuner card is a dual tuning device that, unlike typical TV tuners, hooks into your home network rather than directly into a PC. Once connected to your network, the HDHomeRun then communicates with and sends video to any PC on the LAN. Multiple HDHomeRun devices can be present on a single network.

Home Network

Because the HDHomeRun connects to your PC via a network connection, a home network is required. More specifically, a router or hub is required for the HDHomeRun to connect to. The router/hub should then connect to a PC.

Splitter (optional)

If you need to split the signal, use an HDTV-compliant splitter of at least 5 - 1100Mhz. Be sure that you are not getting a combiner. Though combiners and splitters look very similar, if not identical, a combiner will not properly split the signal.

PC (with the right specs)

You will need an up-to-date computer with recent hardware to decode the HD signal. Make sure your computer meets or exceeds these specifications:

  • Intel® Pentium®, AMD Athlon™ processor at 1.7 GHz or higher
  • 512 MB Ram
  • ATI Radeon 9550 or NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 or Higher
  • 40 GB of available hard drive space (this will allow 5 hours of HD Recording)
  • BDA Compliant ATSC Capture Card
  • Windows XP Home or Pro w/ Service Pack 2
  • DirectX 9.0c

Putting it all together

Step 1: Install HDHomeRun Tuner Card

Plug the HDHomeRun into the wall, connect both of the tuners up to your coax cable, and finally plug a network cable from your home network into the back of the unit.

When you plug the HDHomeRun into your network, make sure you see the green network light (as seen in the figure above). This light indicates a successful connection to the network.

Step 2: Download required setup files and prerequisites

1) Download the HDHomeRun setup program from Silicon Dust’s homepage. If you are using Windows Vista, you should install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistribution package prior to installing the HDHomeRun software.

2) Upgrade to the latest version of Beyond TV (4.6.1 or later) (Download)

Step 3: Configure the HDHomeRun to work with Beyond TV 4

1) Run the HDHomeRun setup program

Note: When running through the setup program, you may be asked to install .NET version 2.0 and a video viewing client called VLC. If you do not have these prerequisites, the wizard will automatically download and install these for you.

2)
After the setup program is finished it will open up the HDHomeRun Setup window. In this window, make sure the HDHomeRun Firmware and HDHomeRun BDA Driver are up to date. The Install All button will be available to you to click on if they are not.

Now click on the Lineup tab and enter your Zip/Post Code and select your Signal Source, which will be "Digital Cable". The Lineup ID may be left blank. Next, click on Finish to close the window.

3) The next step is to scan your cable for available QAM channels.

  • Click on Start -> All Programs -> HDHomeRun -> HDHomeRun Setup

  • The HDHomeRun Setup window will open up again. Click on the Lineup tab again. Your Lineup Configuration should be the same as before. Next click on the Channel Editor button.

4)
Now that you have the available channels, open up your internet browser and go to the TV listings line-up wizard and then proceed to bring up your cable provider's digital cable lineup.

  • Back in the Channel Editor window, you will attempt to view each channel to see which ones are available to you. Once you click on View, it will open up the channel in VLC player. For every channel that you find that is viewable, look on the TV listings wizard for the corresponding channel to identify it. You may also enter the name of the channel into the Guide Name field. Note that some of these channels are not in high definition, while some are. You will have to identify them properly and enter the correct information into the grid.

  • Once you fill in the Guide Name, next to it is the "Type" field: Normal is for a channel listed on the TV listings line-up wizard, Music is for a music channel, and Special is for your On Demand channels or other unlisted channels.

  • In the last column is the "Enable" field, if you decide that you would like to enable a channel for viewing then you should click on it to enable it, otherwise it will be disabled and will not be viewable. It is recommended to Save after every change you make in the Channel Editor.

5)
Once your done filling out the Channel Editor and have saved it, click on the Advanced button. Now you will notice a new column that appears called "Remap". If you notice, only the channels that you have enabled have a set of numbers in them.

This set of numbers is what you will use to create your custom SnapStream.net lineup. To do this, navigate to: http://www.snapstream.net/configure/CustomLineupWizard.aspx in a web browser.

6) The next step is to import an existing SnapStream.net channel lineup that includes the QAM channels that you plan to tune to. Click on "Import Lineup" (make sure to keep the lineup type as "Digital" in the drop-down list).

7) Go through the channel lineup wizard, eventually selecting a channel lineup that includes all of the channels that you wish to tune via QAM (in my case, I select Cable -> Comcast Houston Digital -> Premium Tier).

Click on finish at the end of the import process. Next, check the channels that you will tune via QAM. After checking the channels that you wish to tune, click on "Import" at the bottom of this screen.

8) Now look at your Channel Editor and at the Remap column. We will use the Bravo channel as an example. The numbers in this set are 2-80-1. Now look on the SnapStream.net page again, locate the Bravo channel. The 2 from the set of numbers will replace the current Physcial Channel that is preset. The 80 from the set of numbers will be entered into the Major Channel field, and the 1 will be entered into the Minor Channel field. Repeat these steps for all the channels that you have enabled.

We have created our mapped custom lineup. Next we will add the HDHomeRun tuners to Beyond TV by going through the setup wizard.

9)
After you have installed/upgraded to Beyond TV 4.6.1 (as instructed to do in step 2), make sure Beyond TV is completely shut down, and click on: Start -> All Programs -> SnapStream Media -> Beyond TV -> Beyond TV Setup Wizard. Click "Next" in the setup wizard until you get to the "Video Source" screen.

Highlight "Add a New Source" and click "Next".

10)
Select "Antenna (Digital), click "Next".

11)
Select either of the "SiliconDust HDHomeRun Tuner 1010..." from the drop-down list and choose "Next".

12)
On the next screen choose, "Select an existing lineup" and press "Next".

13)
Select the lineup that you just created in the SnapStream.net import wizard, which will be named "Custom Lineup" if you did not rename it, and press "Next".

14)
Select "stop autoscan" and check the checkboxes for each of the channels that you wish to include. Press "Next".

15)
If you would like to add a second QAM tuner, you must repeat steps 9 - 14 above.

16) Step through the rest of the setup wizard and finally, launch Beyond TV. From the SnapStream.net Program Guide within Beyond TV, press the 'U' key, which will force a guide update. Doing a guide update will import the new channel information associated to the QAM channels into the program guide.

17)
That completes the procedure of setting up the HDHomeRun with Beyond TV 4.6.1. If you experience any issues during this procedure, feel free to contact technical support by submitting a ticket to SnapStream Media or you may visit SiliconDust's Support Page.
