Feature Friday: Katie Lang

How did you find SnapStream?
A little over four years ago, I was working as a nanny, which I loved but had been doing for seven years, so I was looking for something different. I had never worked in an office before, so it was definitely something different for me. I found the job post on Indeed for a personal assistant to Rakesh. I came in for an interview on a Tuesday and by Thursday I was working at SnapStream. It was great to just be able to get started, so I thought that was super cool.

What is your role at SnapStream?
I’ve worn many hats at SnapStream, but currently I’m the Associate Product Owner working with the engineering and product teams. It’s my first time to actually have a team. It’s really exciting working with engineering because I’m working with people I’ve known for years but never worked with directly. We have a lot of features that we’d like to add to the product, but we have to prioritize them and break them into bite sized pieces for the team to work on them. That’s what I do as the product owner is to prioritize features, which means I spend a lot of time in Jira.

How have you grown working at SnapStream?
When I first started at SnapStream, I honestly had never used something like Google sheets, and now I use all kinds of technology all the time. I haven’t met a tool that I can’t figure out if I put a little time and effort into it. I started out working mainly with Rakesh, and then I started helping out with some of the day-to-day things that the company needed. That enabled me to work with a lot of people in different departments, like running company events, kickoff meetings, and getting food for everybody. So I’ve learned everybody’s idiosyncrasies about how they eat as well. I won’t name names, but when we ordered banh mi sandwiches for the entire company, one person ordered just egg and bread on their banh mi, and that was it. So basically an egg sandwich.

What is one of your favorite things about SnapStream?
I would say 100% the people. I’ve made so many friendships at SnapStream. I enjoy hanging out with them like when Aaron, Fred, and Patrick came into town. I was excited because I hadn’t seen them in a very long time, and had never met Fred in person. When Pete scheduled the meeting I was like, “wow this is awesome that I get to hang out with my coworkers and have a lot of fun.”

What do you do when you’re not at SnapStream?
I really like to sew a lot. I make outfits for my kids, and it’s very important to me that they are wearing 100% matching outfits. I’ll make hats, shirts, and pants. What I like the best is that I can pick really absurd fabrics – snails and rainbows or frogs or opossums – although I haven’t found any opossum fabric yet. When I find a pattern and the fabric, and then I see my kid wearing it, it’s a very satisfying hobby.
